Here's to a healthy 2012!

Happy (almost) New Year! This week between Christmas and the New Year is going by quickly and soon we'll have to face up to those resolutions. If you or someone you know will be working to be healthier in 2012, here's an idea: take the candy dish off the coffee table, desk top or kitchen counter and put a miniature garden in its place! A living, green plant might be just the thing to distract your sweet tooth and in this brown Minnesota winter, it's certainly nice to look at.

You know I love to make custom gardens and I'll be happy to use your special items to add personality to your garden. Of course, if you've seen my posts about the "stock room", you know I've got oodles of goodies to customize any garden.

OK - it's not chocolate, but it IS pretty cute!

Stock Room or Guest Room?

There's a bed under all that! I've been organizing my garden supplies and this is where I did it. As you can see, I have plenty of raw materials:

It's lovely to have things sorted, labeled and ready to go!

And more . . .

I was lucky enough to live in Japan and Okinawa early in my career and I've never lost my love for the beauty that surrounded me there. Making gardens that remind me of Japan takes me back to that lovely country. Watch for these things to grace an upcoming Japanese garden.

The Warehouse

You've seen some of my raw materials and today I'm going to show you what got it all started:
fairies. My first fairy garden was outside, in my back yard. I loved working on it, but winter forced me inside. That's when it occurred to me that I could still garden, but on a much smaller scale.

See a fairy you like? Let me know and I'll create a garden just for you!

More of the Stock Room

Art imitates life - wait, should that be the other way around?

Hmmm - anyway, my back yard garden is home to birds of all sorts and so are my tiny gardens. Here are some feathered friends (and some wood and some ceramic, too) that are ready to grace a garden.

The Stock Room

As much as I love making little gardens, I love shopping for little gardens! I'm constantly on the lookout for garden-worthy stuff. I shop thrift stores, dollar stores, garage sales, wholesale houses, craft stores - you name it. Here's my apple collection:

Behind the Scenes, Part 2

As promised - live plants. These guys are waiting for new homes. They'll wind up in little gardens depicting enchanted forests, far off countries or magical flower beds.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Behind the Scenes

You've seen lots of pretty pictures of finished gardens all ready to sell or deliver. For the next few posts, I'm going to show you some never-before-seen pictures of what goes into the process.

These shots were taken in my studio kitchen. Although most of the plants that go into the gardens are live, some embellishments - well, aren't.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Yes, they really are live plants . . .

. . . live, lush and lovely - and the best thing? Easy to care for!
  • Each plant needs one tablespoon of water once a week. That's all. Really.
  • And if a plant gets too large, ivy trails too far or if a leaf turns yellow - snip it off!

More from Maple Grove

I made these for the Maple Grove sale, but anything that doesn't sell there is still available for you!

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

The Maple Grove Sale

What a well run sale! The organizers seemed to think of everything, even coffee and doughnuts!

Next time, however, I think I'll set up a recording of myself saying, "These are all live plants, healthy and easy to care for."

These plants are so pretty, everyone thinks they're fake!

and one in between . . .

I had great fun creating settings for all these lovely figurines supplied by my customer.
Have any little treasures around the house that might like to live in their own, private garden?
I'd love to make one for you!

A Short Order

From tall to tiny! The same customer asked me to make a garden in this little cutie. Even including the tallest plant, it didn't top out over the 10 inch mark.

Thursday, October 6, 2011

A Tall Order

Between sales, I'm busy with special orders. Most recently, I had the fun of creating gardens for a customer who supplied both the containers and the figurines, and let me surprise her with the end results!

When I say "tall order", I mean tall - about 30 inches tall! (In this photo, the vase is on the floor in front of my lower kitchen cabinets.)

Like lovely, optic stemware, this stunning vase has graceful swirls in the glass which adds to the charm of the objects and plants within.

More tomorrow . . .

A View From the Top

Usually a "view from the top" means from a very high place. In this case, it's the view into one of my gardens, no high places needed. Part of the appeal of these gardens (for me) is that they're fun to look at from any angle.

Here's how this looks straight on:

And here's how it looks from the top:

A bird's eye view without having to be a bird and perfect for anyone bothered by heights!

The curse of the black thumb . . .

. . .  I hear it at every sale, "I kill every plant I get." That's so sad!

Here's the thing about my miniature gardens - they're easy to care for. They come with written instructions. And - you can email me if you're uncertain. Every single garden comes with care instructions. See?

I suspect overwatering is behind most cases of black thumb - in a well-meaning effort to keep plants healthy, we mistakenly drown them. Remember - most plants just want a drink, not a bath! Black thumbs can and should enjoy plants - don't let your fears keep you from taking home something like this:

Relax, enjoy and don't overwater!

Help - they're everywhere!

I'm getting ready for the Cobblestone Fair this Saturday and there are fairy gardens everywhere you look. There are gardens in every stage of construction, plants, fairies, stones, etc, etc all over the kitchen. We had a frost warning last night, so all the gardens that were enjoying life on my deck had to come in for the night. Yikes.

I'm excited about my latest product - Fairy Garden Kits. I've put together all the things needed to make a kit at home:

Here's a finished product:

I think this would be a great project for a parent and child or as a gift for an apartment dweller who loves plants or even a college student whose dorm room could use a little green.

Come to my sale. Buy lots - I need my kitchen back!

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

At my sales I have heard from  many customers that they want to make a fairy garden but haven't been able to get started. I thought it might be fun to make creating a fairy garden a little easier by putting together simple fairy garden kits, with directions. I will have do-it-yourself fairy gardens available at my next sale at Cobblestone Gardens in Bloomington this Saturday.
Each kit will have:

  • a glass container
  • already measured rock, horticultural charcoal, and potting soil
  • an ivy plant
  • a fairy
  • moss
  • and a few more accents to create a woodland garden
  • And, of course, directions.

Finally - a Fairy!

It occurred to me that I've been posting so many variations on fairy gardens that it's high time I showed a fairy garden with a fairy in it!

This picture was taken in my kitchen and I do think she looks lovely here, but think how nice something like this would look in your kitchen!

(I can make that happen, you know - see my email on the right or leave me a comment.)

Sleeping dogs . . .

You've heard the saying, let sleeping dogs lie, right? (It means don't stir up trouble.)

These dogs sleep and sleep and they'll never stir up any kind of trouble!

Fairygardens - Gardens = Fairies

I'm always on the lookout for fairies for my gardens, but not all of them wind up in gardens. These lovely ladies were for sale at my last yard sale and I'll also have garden-less fairies available at the Cobblestone Art Sale (see yesterday's post.)

Eclectic miniatures from the world over - day 5

As promised - Paris!
This garden has special memories for me - it was purchased at my first public sale, by a young boy. I was touched and flattered that he liked it enough to spend his own money on it and I do hope he continues to enjoy it.
Most of the gardens pictured on this blog are available and are most definitely for sale. I'm constantly on the look out for miniatures for my gardens, so although this one has found a home, there will certainly be another French themed garden bientôt!

Have a lovely, l-o-n-g weekend!
